Huskies embrace underdog role ahead of 2026 season

Something has shifted in Highland.

The Huskies say they have a new energy this season, one felt on the field and heard in the locker room, as they prepare for a fall campaign they believe will surprise doubters.
Team leaders say being counted out has only sharpened the group’s focus heading into the season.

“We’re very much looked down upon, but when we have everybody healthy and everybody in the right places, we can be a very strong and powerful team,” said senior running back AJ Nugent.

Highland’s most anticipated matchups include an Oct. 2 game against Dover and the Oct. 10 Black & Blue Bowl against Marlboro. The Huskies were winless in two meetings with the Dragons last season. The Dukes currently hold bragging rights in the rivalry after a 7-0 win in the 2025 meeting.

“You have nothing to lose going to these big games,” said quarterback Maison Bragg. “You have to go in with a great mindset, with big expectations, and come out big.”

Energy is a defining trait for this year’s team, players said, with defense shaping up as a particular strength.

“We all stay together. We listen, are disciplined, and that’s just a great recipe for a great season,” said junior guard Aubrey Nugent.

Preseason dedication has also stood out, according to junior tackle Jahdaiah Eliassaint, who said the team showed up “100 percent” when it counted.

“It definitely builds excitement,” Eliassaint said. “It makes the season more enjoyable, and shows us what we should expect.”
Coach Tom Schlappich credited Bragg, Eliassaint and the Nugents — several of whom compete in other Highland sports — with helping set the tone for the season.

“Those guys are very responsible for it, but at the same time we have a great bunch of seniors that have won championships in other sports,” Schlappich said. “So there’s a carryover, and they’re just a good bunch of young men.”

Beyond reminders about practice schedules or workout accountability, players say the team’s leaders have helped build a more positive locker room culture heading into the year.

“We’re a brotherhood, even when we’re down,” Aubrey Nugent said. “We keep a good vibe, and I think that just shows what Highland’s really about.”

Highland opens its season against Wallkill on Sept. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
