As part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Town of Marlborough Recreation Committee is inviting residents to take part in the Marlboro Flagpole Height Contest.
Residents of Marlboro and Milton may submit one guess each on the height of the town’s flagpole. Entries must be submitted by July 24 to MarlboroFlagPole@gmail.com. The closest guess without going over will win a prize basket donated by local businesses. In the event of a tie, finalists will answer a runoff question. The winner will be announced at the final Concert in the Park on July 31.
The Town of Marlborough Recreation Committee’s Summer Concert Series in the Park continues with a “Night at Kellerman’s” on July 10 at Cluett Schantz Memorial Park. Inspired by the movie “Dirty Dancing,” the evening will feature music and dancing with The Big Blue Big Band, along with food vendors and family activities.
The Town of Marlborough Water Department began flushing water lines June 8, a process expected to take two to three weeks. The work removes sediment from water lines. Residents are advised to check their water for discoloration before use and, if necessary, run cold water for a short time. Questions may be directed to the Water Department between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays at 845-795-5100, Ext. 5.
School News
Gabriella Alvarez, a senior at Marlboro High School, was recognized June 10 at the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Ceremony and Exhibition in Manhattan, earning both a National Gold Medal and the National American Vision Award.
The ceremony was held at Carnegie Hall and celebrated some of the nation’s most talented young artists and writers. Alvarez attended with art teachers Amy Tremblay and Rachel Burroughs, along with her mother and sister. Congratulations to Gabriella on her creativity, dedication and accomplishments.
Students Empowering Equality Club members at Marlboro High School held their annual Juneteenth Celebration on June 17. The event featured poetry, music and student speeches highlighting the history and significance of Juneteenth. Following the program, students, faculty and administrators gathered for food, games and fellowship.
Also on June 17, Marlboro Elementary School hosted its annual International Picnic. As part of their cultural studies unit, third-grade students sampled dishes from around the world, turning the cafeteria into a global tasting experience. Organizers thanked the teachers and volunteers who helped make the event possible.
St. Mary’s Church
Father’s Day envelopes are available at the back and side entrances of St. Mary’s Church. Parishioners who use envelopes will find one included in their packet. The envelopes provide an opportunity to remember fathers, grandfathers and special men in their lives at Masses celebrated at St. Mary’s and Our Lady of Mercy churches on Father’s Day.
Marlboro Free Library
The Marlboro Free Library announced several upcoming schedule changes related to renovation work.
The library opened at 2:30 p.m. June 9 because of rooftop HVAC installation and crane operations. Summer hours began June 21, with the library closed Sundays through Sept. 6.
Through July 5, the library will be closed to the public while furniture is installed and renovated spaces are prepared. The library plans to reopen July 6 with modified hours and express services. Updates are available at marlborolibrary.org.
Weekly Recipe
Cheesecake — Annette F.
¼ melted butter
1 cup fine graham crackers
1 tsp. cream of tartar
6 eggs, separated
19 oz. cream cheese
3 tbl. flour
½ tsp. salt
1 pt. sour cream
1 tsp. vanilla
Butter a 9½-inch spring form pan. Mix melted butter and graham crumbs well, reserving ¼ cup of crumbs for topping. Press ¾ cup of crumbs into the bottom of the spring form pan.
Add cream of tartar to egg whites until foamy, then add 3 tbl. of sugar to the egg whites and beat until stiff peaks form.
In a different bowl, beat cream cheese until soft. Gradually mix flour and salt into the cream cheese, then add one egg yolk at a time and beat thoroughly. After all egg yolks are incorporated, add sour cream and vanilla and mix well.
Pour the mixture into the pan and sprinkle the remaining crumbs on top.
Bake at 325 degrees for 1¼ hours. Turn off the oven and open the oven door for ½ hour.
Refrigerate and serve after thoroughly chilled.

• Heart of the Hudson Valley Farmers Market, 1801-1805 Route 9W, Cluett Schantz Park, Milton, runs from early June through early October. The market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• “America: Songs of Patriotism, Praise, and Protest” will be presented Tuesday, June 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Milton Train Station, 41 Dock Road, Milton.
