Founder’s Day program to feature ‘The Bridges of the Hudson River’

The Sarah Hull Hallock Free Library hosts a program to celebrate the library that has been at the heart of Milton, New York for well over a century. Explore Hudson Valley history with presenter Harry Stanton, former NYS Bridge Authority Executive Director, who traces the influence of major Hudson River crossings on the development of the Mid-Hudson region.

When the Bear Mountain Bridge opened in 1924, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, the first large bridge built to carry automobiles and the first to rely on auto tolls to pay for its construction. It also opened the floodgates on an era of American bridge construction.

The Library Board of Trustees invites you for Harry Stanton’s presentation:
• Explore the historical significance of the Bear Mountain Bridge and the other unique crossings that followed, creating the society and prosperity of the Hudson Valley.
• Learn about the politics that delayed the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and the “budgetary wisdom” that doubled its eventual cost.

• Search for the “misplaced piece” of the Mid-Hudson Bridge and look for the Hudson Valley’s “missing bridge.”
The annual Founder’s Day Program is held to commemorate the establishment of the library in 1884 by Dorcas Hull, in memory of her sister, Sarah Hull Hallock. Conversation and a reception follow the presentation. Wednesday, April 24, 7 p.m., free and open to the public, 56-58 Main St. Milton, (845) 795-2200, MiltonLib.org, miltonlibrary@live.com.

The Gomez Mill House and Those Who Lived in It
On Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m., The Marlborough Historical Society will welcome Gomez Mill House Director Carroll F. Cook and Site Manager Richie Rosencrans to the Milton Train Station, where they will present the short film: “Luis Moses Gomez and His Mill House”, followed by a talk by Richie Rosencrans on the history of the subsequent owners of the house. Both Carroll and Richie will be available to answer questions afterward.

The Gomez Mill House Historic Site, located five miles north of Newburgh in the central Hudson Valley, is the oldest standing Jewish dwelling in North America. Built ca. 1716 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the Gomez Mill House has the distinction of being the oldest house in Orange County listed on the NRHP.
The historic Milton Train Station was built in 1883 and is located at 41 Dock Road, Milton, NY, next to the Milton Landing Park on the Hudson River. The train station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

TOMVAC Building Status Update
After a community vote to retain the TOMVAC building, the Town Board immediately formed a committee of volunteers to help formulate a cohesive plan to move forward. Since December 2018, this Committee has met seven times during open public meetings held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month.

The committee consists of ten community members: Councilman Scott Corcoran, Councilman Howard Baker, Bill Woodward, Marie Toombs, Joe Desole, Vince Mannese, Celeste Ricciardone, Diana Henry, George Salinovich, Tom Corcoran and Town Engineer Phil Bell. Their end goal is to present the Town Board with a well thought out design plan and maximum public use for the TOMVAC building.

With the help of Engineers, Architects, HVAC specialists, Electricians, Asbestos professionals and other related tradesmen that have given their professional input, the Committee is putting together a detailed plan for the Town Board. This plan will consist of a new overall floor plan, cost related to renovations and options on three separate areas for use within the building. (Community room, recreation room and meeting room) There is still work to be done on the final plan and the committee would urge the public to attend their next committee meeting on April 23, 7 p.m. at the Town Hall meeting room.

As always, the public can always attend the Town Board meetings for more information. Town Board Meetings are held every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month starting at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall meeting room.
