People don’t bother to vote

One of the many absurd fictions dredged up by the current administration is that there are thousands of people – largely dead people and immigrants – who vote illegally.

Our problem is the opposite! People don’t vote!! Even when 6600 immigrants in New Jersey applied for a drivers’ license, stating they weren’t citizens, they were erroneously registered to vote and only 400 bothered to do so.

I want more people to vote, so with other volunteers I joined Vote Forward, a small, nonprofit organization whose social campaign endeavors to change that. Volunteers write letters to underserved, largely young people who have never voted. Often the recipients are touched that anyone cares that they vote. Check out their website if interested, and join me in increasing the voter rolls. It’s a new idea to many, including me, that you must work for Democracy to preserve it. Let’s do it.
