Town plans Chadwick Lake Rec Center

Posted

Jim Presutti, Town of Newburgh Commissioner of Parks, Recreation & Conservation, announced last Tuesday plans for the creation and construction of a new recreation center.

According to Presutti, during the course of his time as commissioner and prior, the idea for a center was not a direct priority but that changed following the last year.
It was during the pandemic during the course of last year that the unavailability of a space to bring children to play or do activities was what led Presutti to push the initiative forward for a center.

In order to create the design and gather feedback, Presutti began to compile a list of needs or wants that residents would utilize if the center were to be built. He then took the ideas and other concepts to the town’s engineering firm, MHE Engineering to see if they could make the concept a reality.

During the meeting, Presutti called Michael Lamoreaux of MHE Engineering to the microphone to offer his input on the concept.

The design of the first floor of the proposed design would consist of high school size basketball courts, all turf purpose floor and several other spaces that would be open to public use.

The design of the second floor of the building would include a track, multipurpose rooms, and other offices.
The design of the building would rest next to the current parking lot which makes it accessible to all.

According to Presutti, the proposed location for the new recreation center will be at Chadwick Lake.

The facility will replace a current rink that is being underutilized at the current park. According to Presutti, the rink itself does have cracks that need to be repaired but the rink still offers usage for some summer time activities. With this new facility, logistically, it will be a more centralized location for residents.

The current plans that were on display during the course of the meeting are only in the preliminary phase according to Presutti. The current designs are subject to change in the coming days. Once a solidified concept is approved, costs will be determined and public input will be included. For now, this project is all concept.
