Town of Newburgh Police Chief Bruce Campbell presented to the Newburgh Town Board on Monday, March 13 a new police security initiative known as Help Keep Our Neighborhood Safe that would see community members assist with investigations through voluntary submissions of home security camera footage.
A breakdown of the program, an application and a letter from the chief were posted to the Town of Newburgh Police Department Facebook page and the chief said the department was working to have the materials available on the town website.
“We’ve launched a new initiative that allows homeowners and businesses to voluntarily register their surveillance and doorbell cameras with us,” said Campbell. “How it works is when we have a criminal event, a criminal event in the area, we’ll contact anyone who has their cameras registered with us and have them search their own recordings to see if there might be something relevant to our investigation and then they can voluntarily deliver that media to us.”
Campbell further clarified to the board that the submissions would remain anonymous and the videos would not be shared with anyone unless with expressed permission. Registration forms can be obtained for that from any town police officer or can be obtained from the police stations as well.
