Tiki bar soon to open on Front Street

The Jet Set, a tropical tiki bar, restaurant, and lounge, is about to land at the Newburgh Waterfront this summer. The business partnership brings together some of the hottest business minds in Newburgh, the owners of Liberty Street Bistro, Newburgh Flour Shop, Colorcube, and Society of Lash. The Jet Set, located at 50 Front Street, will bring contemporary tropical cocktails and food with a laidback mid-century vibe.

Michael Kelly, currently an owner and operator of Liberty Street Bistro, Liberty Street Events, and Newburgh Flour Shop under AMK Restaurant Group, shared that the idea for The Jet Set came after visiting a tiki bar in New Paltz. He had recently been approached about a space on the Newburgh waterfront and initially declined, but changed his mind after thinking a tiki bar was the right fit for the space. Along with his wife Alex, a co-owner of Liberty Street Bistro and Newburgh Flour Shop, and also a journalist and editor who oversees all social media management, publicity, and marketing initiatives for AMK Restaurant Group, Kelly went to work on ways to bring the new venture to life.

Kelly approached his friend and fellow Newburgh businessman Pat Nunnari about some ideas for the project, and Nunnari quickly jumped onboard. He is co-owner of Colorcube Print Co., a design and print shop, as well as the owner of King Street Sign Co., a sign shop with a focus on local small businesses, both located in the City of Newburgh. From there the partnership grew to include Nunnari’s wife Stephanie, a fourth-generation Newburgh native, co-owner of Colorcube Print Co., and owner of Society of Lash, which encompasses three award-winning beauty studios located in the Hudson Valley.

The final pieces of the puzzle fell into place with the addition of two of Kelly’s friends and Liberty Street Bistro hospitality experts Jessica Gonzalez and Maggie Lloyd. Gonzalez will be General Manger and head of the cocktail program for The Jet Set.

Gonzalez, has worked at Nomad and Death & Co in New York City and has worked with numerous Hudson Valley bars and restaurants over the years as a beverage consultant. Lloyd will act as Executive Chef for The Jet Set, bringing her extensive background in hospitality to the experience. She is currently the Chef de Cuisine at Liberty Street Bistro, in addition to being an owner and operator of Liberty Street Events, a full-service catering operation.

With hospitality at the helm of The Jet Set experience from the décor all the way to dining, the team is eager to open for business with creating a memorable experience for guests ingrained in all of their work. Lloyd shared that guests can expect a dining experience that matches the creativity of the venue and cocktail program.

“As a chef, I’ve always loved making really great bar food- it’s fun, versatile, and always satisfying. The food at The Jet Set will be my ideal bar food, and I’m really looking forward to bringing a more sophisticated take on classic tiki fare,” Lloyd shared.

Drinks will include fan favorites in tiki culture as well as some of The Jet Set’s proprietary cocktails that are being newly developed according to Gonzalez.

“Remember that vacation you never wanted to leave? I want to take us back to that. Only this time, the drinks will be balanced and made with fresh juice and quality ingredients. First and foremost is the flavor, then the fun. I want The Jet Set to be known not just as a great spot on the Newburgh Waterfront, but also for some of the best cocktails in the Hudson Valley,” said Gonzalez.

Pat Nunnari, a self- proclaimed tiki enthusiast, shared that guests should be ready to be fully immersed in tiki culture. The space will have high top tables leading into a dining area which then brings them to an outside seating area with two outdoor bars.

“We’re gearing The Jet Set to have an authentic tiki look with a bit of the focus on the glory days of air travel given the idea of jet set. The mid-century modern vibe will be reflected in the interior decor elements throughout the space. The Jet Set will encompass escapism- when you’re here it will feel like you’re not in Newburgh and that you took a trip back in time,” said Nunnari.

The Jet Set is expected to open its doors this summer at 50 Front Street.
