Happy Wednesday!
Sitting at our camp today, sunny out and a wonderful breeze rushing through the trees, I find a peace that has been missing for a long time. I am sure many of you are taking deep breath of the fresh air, soaking up the sun that has been lost for thirty-days, opening windows to make the stale air of the past month disappear, cleaning outdoor furniture and smelling the flavors coming of the grill. As we revive our bodies, minds and souls please take a moment over the coming weekend to remember those who aren’t here to celebrate the unofficial beginning of summer but made it possible for you to have your freedom.

Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day, is observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. First called Decoration Day, the holiday started following the Civil War and in 1971, Congress passed a law making Memorial Day a federal holiday.

The Town of Newburgh and Scout Troop 27, placed flags on the military graves at Cedar Hill Cemetery this past Sunday to start the recognition of those who served in the military. I ask every year, that you take time from your official summer celebration, talk to your children, grandchildren about the meaning of the day and why it is an important day.

The Town of Newburgh American Legion will be holding a Memorial Day parade on Sunday, May 26 at 1 p.m. The parade will start at the American Legion Hall on Union Avenue with the parade route as follows: Union Avenue, right onto Route 300, left onto Route 52 (South Plank Road), left onto Powder Mill Road ending at Algonquin Park with a memorial ceremony immediately after the end of the parade. The parade route will begin to close around 11 a.m. with all roads being closed by 12:30 p.m.

Thank you to all who gave their lives or has since died for our freedom and for the American Legion, VFW, Town of Newburgh Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary, Police Department, Ambulance Corps, Boy and Girl Scout Troops and our local government representatives for taking the time to pay respect on this Memorial Day.

Spring Cleaning made easy this year: Good-Will Ladies Auxiliary will be holding a Yard Sale on June 1 as a fundraiser. The auxiliary is asking for donations to be sold. They will even arrange to pick up your donations by May 31. Email: kepeko@aol.com for more information. Join the re-purposing movement, donate to a great organization of community ladies.

Happy belated birthday to Paige Furman who celebrated her 5th birthday yesterday May 21.

Birthday wishes this week are Margaret Clegg celebrating on May 26, Nancy Pacella and her twin brother Angelo Crisci on May 27, Anne DeRienzo on May 29 and Shirley Sledzianowski on May 30. Wishing you all the best for the coming year.
