Safe Harbors offers GED Prep Program

Posted

For nearly twenty years, the Safe Harbors of the Hudson Cornerstone Residence GED Program has offered local residents the opportunity to obtain their GED certification at any stage of their life. The program, in partnership with SUNY Orange, is free and open to the local community as well as Cornerstone residents. Currently, the program is accepting applications for new students.

According to Safe Harbors of the Hudson Director of Programming June Henley, the GED instructor is certified in PreK-12, special education and shop, known now as technology. The instructor is able to work with individual students at their own comfort level giving them a personal experience. The instructor is also able to assist individuals with special needs and learning disabilities which allows the program to be tailored to an individual’s learning ability. Tutoring is also available on a one-on-one basis as needed.

The stories of past GED program participants demonstrate the importance of this program in the community. From students who dropped out of high school and decided to go back later in life to those with special needs or life circumstances that require extra assistance, the program is changing lives in the Newburgh area.

According to Henley, “The Safe Harbors Cornerstone Residence GED program is an asset to the community. Many of our students join the program to simply better their life circumstances. Our instructor is highly trained and able to tailor the instruction to each individual student, which allows the program to be as interactive and successful as possible.”

The Cornerstone Residence GED program meets on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Registration for the program is offered three times a year through SUNY Orange, but admission is on a rolling basis and participants can start when a seat is available. Cornerstone GED Program is located at 111 Broadway in the City of Newburgh. For more information, contact June Henley, 845-784-1110 or email jhenley@safe-harbors.org.
