Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Monday, May 6, 2024, Obed Arellano-Mendez, age 37, of Newburgh, was sentenced to seven years in prison and five years of post-release supervision in connection to his previous guilty plea in Orange County Court to Rape in the First Degree.

As part of the sentence, Arellano-Mendez will also be registered as a sex offender under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA).

The defendant previously admitted in Court that on or about October 29, 2023 at a location in the City of Newburgh, he engaged in sexual intercourse with another person who was incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless.

Hoovler thanked the City of Newburgh Police Department for their investigation and the arrest of Arellano-Mendez.

“The heinous act of sexual assault against a helpless victim is a stark reminder of the pervasive threat of sexual violence in our society,” said Hoovler. “We stand in solidarity with the survivor and vow to pursue justice with unwavering determination. I want to commend the diligent efforts of law enforcement in swiftly responding to and investigating this crime. Their dedication and professionalism are instrumental in ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable and that our community remains safe.”

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Christine Maggiore.
