Newburgh remembers two line-of-duty deaths

Posted

Two of Newburgh’s finest were remembered on Saturday, November 18 in two special ceremonies.

The first was a gathering at Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor, to mark the 50th anniversary of the line of duty death of Officer William Robinson. Speakers included City of Newburgh Police Commissioner José Gomérez, PBA President Elect Police Officer Francis Quinn and Mayor Torrance Harvey.

A short time later, the Town of Newburgh honored Robinson and fellow officer Robert Betanzos, who succumbed to injuries sustained on July 4, 1977 when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while directing traffic at the city’s waterfront following 4th of July activities. The town officially dedicated two streets in the Meadow Winds community as Betanzos Way and Bill Robinson Way.
