A Newburgh Free Academy senior is getting a firsthand look at local government as the Town of New Windsor welcomes its first student intern to the supervisor’s office.

Daniela Bustillo, a 12th-grade student at NFA West, joined the office Oct. 29 through a partnership between the town and the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. She will spend Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. working alongside town officials for the rest of the school year.

Bustillo has an interest in international relations, diplomacy and public service. She will “learn more about how municipal government operates, how local decisions are made, and how elected officials and town employees work together to serve residents,” according to the Town of New Windsor Facebook page.

Bustillo will conclude the internship by presenting what she learned to her teacher.

“When I was contacted by the Newburgh School District about this program, I immediately jumped at the opportunity,” Supervisor Stephen A. Bedetti said. “I believe it is important to get our young people involved in government and help them understand how local government works.”

Bedetti also invited residents interested in understanding town operations to contact his office and arrange a visit.
