Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh honored its outgoing executive director, Robin Bello, and bookkeeper Gloria Yannone with a retirement celebration at the Powelton Club on Friday, Oct. 25. Volunteers with the organization were also celebrated at the event, which was marked by shared food, laughter, and gratitude.
Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh provides freshly prepared, hot meals to homebound individuals who are unable to cook due to age, illness, injury, or disability. The organization also offers frozen meals for evenings, weekends, and holidays, all delivered by volunteers who add a friendly visit with each delivery. Since its founding in 1972, Meals on Wheels has prepared and delivered over 530,000 meals, with volunteers donating 11,214 hours in 2023 alone.
Bello has served as executive director for the past decade and was a board member since 2000. “Without these volunteers, we couldn’t do what we do,” said Bello. “They make my job easier, and working with seniors is so fulfilling—even a quick visit can make a difference.” Bello plans to spend her retirement traveling and enjoying time with her children and grandchildren.
Yannone, also celebrated at the event, shared her admiration for the Meals on Wheels team, saying, “This is the most incredible group of people I’ve ever met. They touch my heart every day.” While a new bookkeeper is being sought, Yannone plans to return part-time.
New executive director Jennifer Verdin, who joined the organization in July, expressed her excitement to build on Bello’s legacy. “I’m grateful for Robin’s guidance and look forward to continuing the work of connecting with our community,” Verdin said, adding that she hopes to help the organization find a permanent home.
Board President Carole McDermott praised Bello, calling her “a wonderful executive director” and a longtime friend. “Enjoy your future, Robin, and keep that positive attitude,” McDermott said.
Longtime volunteer Rhea Fleckenstein echoed the sentiment, noting that Bello’s presence will be missed. “Robin has been the face of Meals on Wheels. She keeps us organized, and we’ll miss her. But I’m happy she’ll have more time with her family.”
The afternoon event began with remarks, acknowledgments, and a prayer led by Linda Lewis-Burger, a board member and great-niece of Meals on Wheels founder Frederica Warner. “If my aunt were here, she’d be so proud to see us all continuing her dream,” said Lewis-Burger.
