The Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks boys basketball team achieved a trio of wins this past week, improving their season record to 9-7.
On Friday, the Goldbacks dominated the visiting Yonkers Bulldogs with a decisive 78-41 victory in a non-league matchup. This win followed a narrow 45-42 triumph over Valley Central on Wednesday, where Newburgh overcame a halftime deficit by outscoring the Vikings 20-6 in the third quarter.
The Goldbacks were led by Shaun Gonzalez with 13 points, while Jaeden Pagan, and Jahsir Davis had 10 points apiece and Bruce Marshall accounted for 8.
Earlier in the week, on Monday, the Goldbacks edged out the Middletown Middie Bears 81-77, aligning with their higher state ranking.
The Goldbacks are set to host Monroe-Woodbury on Thursday, February 20, in a Section 9 Orange County I bout. The Crusaders, currently holding a 10-8 record, are coming off a close 51-48 non-league loss to Valley Central.
Yonkers’ defeat on Friday drops them to 2-14 for the season, while Valley Central’s loss on Wednesday brings their record to 12-5. Middletown continues to face challenges, having lost 11 of their last 13 games, resulting in a 4-14 season record.
The Goldbacks’ recent performance demonstrates their resilience and determination as they prepare for the upcoming game against Monroe-Woodbury.
