During their previous game, it took the Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks until the second half to score their first goal of the game.
However, this time it took less than four minutes, thanks to Ian Enamorado-Garcia.
Enamorado-Garcia scored two goals in the first half, lifting the Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks to a 7-2 win over the Valley Central Vikings on Saturday in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I boys’ soccer game at Valley Central High School in Montgomery.
“I think it set the tone for the rest of the game,” Garcia said. “It helps us settle down because teams like this, and Pine Bush, they put all their defense in the back.
Getting an early goal gives us more confidence to keep going into the game.”
The Goldbacks doubled their lead in the 18th minute on Griffin Robinson’s goal. Justin Saravia assisted on both goals. Garcia added his second goal in the 37th minute off an assist from Erwin Pineda.
“It just relaxes you,” Newburgh coach Matt Iorlano said. “The other night we were in Pine Bush we didn’t score until the second half, and we’re not used to that. Then you start pressing and doing things that you should be doing and getting impatient.”
The Vikings did one thing no one had done against the Goldbacks this season. They scored a goal.
By the time that happened, the Goldbacks already had a 2-0 lead. In the 30th minute, Valley Central’s Sebastien Shariff Sanchez launched a shot from 25 yards out that found the top right corner of the goal, just out of the reach of goalkeeper Giovani Sanchez.
“We don’t like to concede goals, but it was a great shot,” Iorlano said. “Give the kid credit. He hit a beautiful shot. That was the first goal we gave up all season, but we played hard against a team that’s come a long way.”
The Goldbacks built on their lead in the second half. Saravia, who finished with two assists, scored his only goal of the game, giving the Goldbacks a 4-1 lead. Piero Altamirano added a goal off an assist from Robinson, while Manny Jimenez teamed with Pineda for the sixth. Iker Enamorado-Garcia tacked on the seventh.
“We just had to keep going and keep scoring goals and not let the other team back in the game,” Ian Enamorado-Garcia said. The Vikings’ second goal was credited to Stephen Felizzi.
It’s been a strong start for the Goldbacks, who have won their first five. Their closest game was Thursday’s 2-0 win over the Pine Bush Bushmen. They’re 2-0 in the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I and will visit the Middletown Middies on Wednesday.
“We feel proud,” Ian Enamorado-Garcia said.
“Obviously, there’s still a long season ahead of us and we want to keep going. To keep doing that we ‘ve got to keep playing the same way and keep seeing our results.”
