Questions about Cornwall’s future

Posted

I am writing this letter to ask for clarification on two issues being discussed by both sides in the upcoming town election. I ask these questions from a nonpartisan perspective, as a registered independent who does not align myself with any political party.

My first question concerns the intermittent construction activity at the proposed hotel site on Main Street. From visiting the area and speaking with workers, there appears to be a flurry of activity at the site, followed by extended periods of little visible progress. Although it may appear that hotel construction has been ongoing, one worker explained that much of the work I assumed was related to the hotel was actually part of the continuing drainage project along and behind Hasbrouck Avenue.

I grew up in Cornwall, left for a time, and returned seven years ago. I fully understand the environmental remediation challenges associated with the history of this site. My questions are straightforward: Where does the project currently stand, it seems as though there is a tremendous amount of work that still needs to be done. It has been numerous years since the beginning of this project.

My second question concerns the recently approved comprehensive plan. From watching town meetings online, I have not seen anything suggesting that the plan will result in immediate changes. I am in favor of sensible progress, but progress must be approached thoughtfully and responsibly. I support sensible progress and we all recognize that Cornwall has valuable assets that, depending on how they are managed could lead us in a very positive direction, or catastrophic results that other surrounding communities have experienced.

What safeguards are in place to ensure that future development remains consistent with Cornwall’s character and the interests of its residents? What protections would prevent development that could fundamentally change the town we know and love?

In previous letters, I have written about how impressed I was by the younger generation of people I encountered who embraced the very things I loved so much about coming home. That response meant so much to us that three of my four adult children, along with their young families, chose to follow us here.

My hope is that my children and grandchildren will continue to experience Cornwall and enjoy all that it has to offer. I believe asking thoughtful questions about our town’s future is an important part of making that possible. We need to remember that this election is not about politics, it’s about Cornwall and nothing else.
