Nearly a dozen fire companies respond to Cornwall-on-Hudson blaze

Cornwall-on-Hudson Fire Department was called to 10 Stable Way, off Mountain Rd., just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday (September 15) afternoon for a structure fire that kept firefighters at the location through the night. The home appears to have been nearly completely destroyed. There were no injuries reported as of 8 a.m. Wednesday, and the cause of the blaze had not yet been determined or announced.

At about 9 p.m., Chief Mike Trainor reported that his department was still on the scene for the ongoing fire. “This will be an extended operation, and fire personnel will remain on scene as needed to ensure all fire has been fully extinguished and the area is safe,” Trainor wrote on the Storm King Engine Company #2 Facebook page. “At this time there is in no current hazard to residents.”

He did note that smoke and strong odors may continue into the night. Residents of the area reported low water pressure throughout the evening as fire hydrants were used to battle the blaze. Earlier in the afternoon, the thick black smoke was reported to have been seen as far as Blooming Grove and Washingtonville.

In addition to COHFD, Cornwall, Highland Falls, West Point, Vails Gate, New Windsor, Fort Montgomery, Salisbury Mills, Washingtonville and Continental Village Fire Departments all responded, most with tankers. Orange County fire officials, as well as local and state police were also on the scene, and the Air Guard firefighters from Stewart Airport were called to the scene. New Windsor/Cornwall EMS was also at the scene.

Mountain Rd. and several residential streets were closed during the response.

In December 2024 firefighters were called to a significant structure fire at the same location.
