Merrie Geraldine “Dean” Sealy Tilton Satterly, 96, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, surrounded by family.
Dean was born in Selma, Alabama, on September 10, 1929, to the late Reuben Ornan Sealy and Ida Mabel Rayburn Polley Sealy of Paducah, KY. She is survived by her sister: Linda Rosaland Sealy Creason; her daughters: Merrie Ellen Tilton and Nancy Hendrick; her grandchildren: Tiffany Dorman, Johnny Hendrick, Aaron Bobuk, and Kristen Bobuk; and six great-grandchildren: Brantlee Hendrick, Briella Dorman, Kinsley Dorman, Eleanor Bobuk, Dietrich Bobuk, and Aurelia Bobuk.
Dean was preceded in death by her loving husband and love of her life: Joseph Chase Satterly; and her sister: Ruby Ornan Sealy Beggs.
With a Master's Degree in Education, Dean devoted more than 40 years to education as an elementary and middle school teacher, primarily in the Washingtonville school district, and after retirement, as director of the Village Nursery School. She was a librarian at the Cornwall Public Library for over 50 years. She was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Asbury Park, NJ, a member of the Cornwall New Windsor Horse Thief Detecting Society and was one of the founding members of the Cornwall, NY Historical Society.
Dean embraced life with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. Every outing had the potential for a story. She loved dancing of all kinds, especially ballroom. She loved a good bourbon, country music, playing tennis, and had a passion for traveling. She visited over 50 countries and sailed on more than 75 cruises, most of which centered around her love of ballroom dancing. Many times, she brought family along.
Her adventurous and generous spirit led her to build houses alongside Jimmy Carter, and she volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for many years. Her unabashed spirit occasionally led to clashes with supervisors and mayors over a needed change or project, but her input was always sought, and no matter how many feathers she ruffled, she remained a fixture at the top of every party invitation list.
She loved playing dominoes and bridge, and for many years could be found playing tennis at Town Hall and Sports Plex. There she won numerous matches and generously shared her love of the game by helping young players improve. She was the captain of her college tennis team and led them to undefeated seasons.
At the library, she knew the name of everyone that walked through the door and she always had the perfect book recommendation or that piece of local history. She mentored, encouraged, and inspired many young pages. She would be the first to greet a newcomer to town and would never turn down a party invitation.
Dean greeted everyone with a warm, contagious smile which could light up the room. She had a remarkable collection of stories and memories from a life truly well lived. Her adventurous spirit, kindness, humor, and love of family and friends will be remembered by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, but the memories she created and the lives she touched will live on for generations.
In Dean’s memory, you can do the following: enjoy lunch with friends, read a book, mentor someone in need, thank a teacher (or librarian), volunteer your time, donate to your favorite charity, call an old friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, enjoy a glass of wine (or bourbon) with those you love while reminiscing about life’s heartfelt moments, hug your children and grandchildren, take time to smell the roses while tending to your garden, laugh often, love much, and dance (!), and somewhere Dean will be dancing with Joe, and smiling.
Visitation for Dean will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. A Memorial Chapel Service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, September 10th at 11:00 a.m. She will be buried alongside her late husband in Bethlehem Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
