Cornwall Board works to replace Chief Gebert

With the September 23 retirement of Cornwall Police Chief Joseph Gebert rapidly approaching, Supervisor Josh Wojehowski said this week that he planned to give an update on finding a new chief at Tuesday’s Town Board work session.

“We got the list from Orange County on Friday (August 28) after the latest round of testing was graded,” he said, “and we’ll now canvass the top of the list for candidates – sending out letters to see if they are interested in an interview.”

The process to replace a police chief is dictated by Orange County Civil Service. Wojehowski confirmed there is a current CPD officer on the list, but to get to that person, he said, they must follow a certain process.

If September 23 comes and goes and there is no new chief appointed, the supervisor said that they will work with Chief Gebert prior to his retirement to appoint someone to an ‘officer-in-charge’ situation. Wojehowski said town officials are currently checking to see what the town’s residency requirement is.

“We really are sorry to see Chief Gebert go,” he added.
