Additional roles for Board of Ed members

Posted

In addition to simply serving as a member of the Cornwall Central School District’s Board of Education, the nine members of that board each serve on several board committees, some serve on district-wide committees, and some serve as the district’s representatives of outside groups.

Those additional responsibilities were finalized at the August 18 meeting of the board. As well, board members discussed the one vacant board seat – a term that expires in June 2027 and is open due to the resignation of Carl Gilpatrick in July. The board is expected to decide in September whether they want to leave the seat vacant or appoint someone to it. At last week’s meeting, the board members came to agreement that they don’t want to go through the time and cost of holding a special election for the seat.

Back to the committees. The following is the list of who serves on the board’s internal committees:

Audit Committee: Chair Kathleen Hand, and members Christine Diaz and Margaret Quinn

Communications Committee: Chair Brendan Carty, and members Jamie Fox, Quinn and Lofton Riser

Facilities Committee: Chair Jim Creagan and members Kate Carey, Carty and Hand

Policy Committee: Chair Carty and members Creagan, Hand and Riser

Visitation Committee: Chair Fox and members Carey and Quinn

The Board also appointed a delegate and alternate to the Orange County School Boards Association (OCSBA) and a legislative liaison. Quinn will be the delegate to the OCSBA with Carey as the alternate. Creagan will be the legislative liaison.

Appointed to the district-wide Health, Safety and Security Committee were Hand and Riser; and appointed to the district-wide Technology Committee were Carty and Fox.

Another requirement of all state School Boards is appointing a delegate and alternate to New York State School Boards Association’s annual meeting and convention – Diaz will hold the delegate position with Creagan as the alternate. In this role, the delegate conveys the CCSD’s position on various topics for NYSSBA lobbying purposes.
