Walden’s departing treasurer bound for the beach

Kelly A. Kelly, after serving as Walden’s treasurer for several years, will officially resign on January 31 and move on to a new position in Queens, but not before providing some insight on her time in the village and her plans moving forward.

Kelly is a 45-year resident of Montgomery who graduated from Valley Central High School and SUNY New Paltz; she enjoyed mathematics and pursued finances and accounting. She officially became Walden’s treasurer on April 4, 2016, serving as her introduction to government financing.

“I didn’t know anything about governmental finance and accounting until I took this position, and now I feel very versed,” she said.

Kelly worked in Walden until July 2022, when she resigned and became the City of Middletown’s treasurer. Following the resignation of her successor, Elizabeth Skinner, Kelly returned to Walden and resumed her position in June 2023. Now a week away from permanently resigning, Kelly will soon move to Rockaway, Queens, where she will continue working as a treasurer within the borough.

“I have an offer to be a treasurer somewhere close to Queens, so I am going to continue my career in governmental accounting,” she said, adding that she’ll be near the beach, one of her favorite pastimes.

Kelly, despite ending this chapter in her career, loved Montgomery and serving Walden’s community and government. Some of her biggest achievements include removing the village from the New York State Comptroller’s fiscal stress list, streamlining billing processes, and working with the boards to maintain taxes.

“It’s been a wonderful experience, great working with everyone in the community and all the department heads here in the village, dealing with the residents,” she said. “It’s just a wonderful place today.”

While she won’t be around in person, Kelly asserted that she will help however she can to ensure a smooth transition for the next treasurer, only being a phone call away.

“I am always available. I think everyone on our board and all the department heads here know that, when they find a treasurer, I will be able to assist them,” she said. “When I was in Middletown, they called me anytime they needed anything and I was able to assist them. But yes, I will always be here to help anyone in the village.”
