Walden preparing for CDBG grant

Posted

The Village of Walden is hoping to begin the discussion of potential projects that could happen because of Community Development Block Program funding.

The Community Development Block Program provides yearly grants to municipalities to enforce community development and expand economic opportunities in moderate and low income areas. This is through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and the program is also authorized under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.

In November 2022, Walden was one of many municipalities to receive funding from CDBG to support many infrastructure and ADA projects. Walden specifically received $125,000 for sanitary sewer lining improvements.

“The last couple times we asked for sewer lining, the time before that, sidewalks. Those are generally the most funded,” said Village Manager John Revella, while giving examples to the board. “Sewer’s been very high on the list and helpful, and they’ve been awarding those. [Also] water, sidewalks, that type of thing.”

Deputy Mayor Willie Carley asked for the specific criteria for the grant, which Revella mentioned was lengthy. “There’s a 100 and something page document that goes through the eligibility requirements, but we can try and get cliff notes for that” Revella said.

There will be a public hearing for discussing potential CDBG projects on Tuesday, March 7.
