Town agrees to library’s needs

The Town of Montgomery has agreed to give the Village of Montgomery Free Library $60,000 after the library made requests to both the town and village for more funding in mid February.

Currently the library is receiving $27,500 in funding from the village, which Library Director Betsy Comizio has made clear won’t support them and their needs much longer. The library approached both the village and town, asking for $60,000 from both in order to keep the library afloat since donations and other funding methods either haven’t been sustainable enough or haven’t worked out.

They are the least funded library in the Ramapo Catskill Library System (RCLS), according to Comizio, who also noted the rising fees for books and hours of operation reduction. Despite this, they aren’t the least circulated, and many are getting worried about the library staying open.

However, Comizio has conversed with Town of Montgomery Supervisor Ron Feller, and both parties report a positive outcome.

“The Village of Montgomery is getting $60,000 from the town and it’s [already] budgeted for. They’ve been informed that’s what they’re getting and they seem to be very happy,” said Feller.

Comizio confirmed this.

However Feller cannot speak for the village, who has yet to announce their funding for the library. He does however mention that it will be brought up at the Village Board Meeting on March 7, which Comizio notes the library’s board president will be presenting at.“We still want $60,000 from the Village of Montgomery, we’re currently getting the $27,500,” said Comizio.
