Sonia Maria Carrion-Del Pilar of Middletown passed away, Thursday, December 7, 2023. She was 90.

The daughter of Juana Garcia and Thomas Carrion, Sonia was born September 12, 1933 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She resided in Middletown, N.Y. for 55 years, and moved in August 2023 to Trinity, Florida.

She is survived by her siblings: brother, David Carrion, of Maybrook, N.Y., sister, Irene Jankowski and her spouse Peter (Sonny) of East Elmhurst, N.Y., sister-in-law, Thelma Carrion, of Maybrook, NY, sister-in-law Betty and her spouse Lou Finelli of Tempe, Arizona; her children: Raul (Tito) Del Pilar Jr. and Claudia of Newburgh, NY, Yvonne Maria Faraone and Sam of Walden, NY, Marisa Yvette Estrada and Jose (David) of Land O Lakes, FL; grandchildren: Frank Marino Jr. and Jennifer, Jennifer Marino-Buenahora and Andrew, all of Florida, Michael Del Pilar of Newburgh NY, Christina Faraone-Macchia & Anthony of Texas, Thomas Faraone and Lauren Armond of Unionville, NY, Zoe Estrada and Mario Grupico of Connecticut, Kip Gallagher of Florida, and Lisa Van Wyck of California;  great grandchildren: Cecilia Maria Macchia, Zachary Lindsay and Sebastian Van Wyck.

She found great joy in later years with special friend Nick Schiraldi and his children, Barbara and Nickie and their families of Texas. 

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, all throughout the states, and the Garcia-Rosario and Del Pilar families in Puerto Rico. 

Sonia was pre-deceased by husband Raul Enrique Del Pilar Sr., brothers Ruben Carrion and Thomas Carrion Jr. 

She was a graduate of SUNY-Empire State College and earned her Master’s Degree from the New School for Social Research, New York. 

Sonia worked as a HealthCare Manager at Arden Hill Hospital (Orange Regional Medical Center) for 32 years, Administrator of Sullivan Internal Medical Group, Monticello, and an adjunct professor at Dominican College, Orangeburg, NY. She was also the owner of Sonia’s Bed and Breakfast in Middletown, NY. After retirement, she was a volunteer at Garnet Health Center and recently volunteered at the day care center near her new home reading to 2-, 3- and 4-year-old children.

Sonia was a former board member of Literacy Orange, an ESL tutor, a member of Friendship Force of Hudson Valley, a former member of Hudson Valley and National Association, Assn of Healthcare Access Management and a member of the Association of Mental Health Administrators. 

She was a Eucharistic Minister and member of Cursillo at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Bullville. 

She happily hosted a weekly faith sharing group attended by many at her home since the 1990’s, which moved to Zoom during the pandemic and continues today. 

Sonia inspired many by her active life and practice of her faith. She will be missed by not just her family but by the many, many, people she touched along the way.  

A Funeral Mass was held, Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at St. Paul’s Church, Bullville, NY
