Ronald Feller becomes 9th District legislator

The Town of Montgomery and the Town of Wallkill boards, during a special joint meeting on Wednesday, January 3, unanimously appointed Ronald Feller, former Montgomery supervisor, to serve a one-year term as legislator for Orange County’s 9th District.

Steve Brescia, Montgomery’s newest supervisor, asserted that Feller would be a great fit for the position, given his government experiences and community services.

“I can’t think of a better candidate than Ron Feller to fill that vacancy for a year,” Brescia said. “He did an exceptional job in the one year as supervisor, comes with a wealth of experience in so many facets of life. Family man, sports coach, he does his research, he’s very meticulous.”

“He had a transition for me in the last two to three weeks, I spent at least 30 hours here at town hall, and that was exceptional. I thank him for that,” he continued.

Members of Wallkill’s board agreed with Brescia and spoke similarly about Feller before motioning his appointment.

“When you’re talking about one year and you’re looking for somebody to fill that spot, I think you go for the experience,” said Mark Coyne, a Wallkill councilman. “Everything I’ve learned of you, Ron, you’re very experienced in what you did for a living and what you’ve done for government. I have no problem supporting Ron tonight.”

“Because it’s a temporary position, you want someone who can hit the ground with their feet running,” said Eric Johnson, another Wallkill councilman. “Ron, who came to our meeting, explained his background, his experience, where he is, where he’s coming from and his ability to serve. And his desire to serve, which is the most important part.”

“Ron was kind enough to meet with us, and I wish him the best of luck. I think he will do a good job and think of Wallkill,” said Eric Valentin, a fellow Wallkill councilman.

Feller thanked both boards for the opportunity but prefaced that he doesn’t like running.

“Just a general comment: I’m not into running anymore, I walk fast,” Feller joked, prompting a chuckle from the room.
