Kelly O’Connor working towards Gold Award

Posted

Girl Scout, Kelly O’Connor, of Walden, member of Troop 255 has been working toward earning her Girl Scout Gold Award – the highest that Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts (grades 9-12) can earn. To become a Gold Award Girl Scout, a girl identifies an issue she cares about , then plans and carries out a project to address it which will have a lasting impact in her community and beyond, Gold Award projects require a commitment of at least 80 hours from a Girl Scout. Nationally, only 6 percent of eligible Girl Scouts earn the award.
For her project, Kelly wanted to recognize and honor the Veterans in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Montgomery by creating a database listing personal information and GPS coordinates for each Veteran buried in the cemetery. Kelly and her team of helpers spent many hours at the cemetery collecting and checking data on the nearly 350 Veterans buried at the cemetery. For each Veteran, Kelly used an app on her smartphone to collect the GPS coordinates for the location of their headstone or military grave marker. GPS coordinates will allow friends and family members to use their smartphone to locate their loved ones more easily when the cemetery caretaker is unavailable. The data base includes the Veteran’s name, date of birth and death, branch of service, War in which they served, honors or medals, and GPS coordinates. Copies of the database have been shared with Tim Dempsey, a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Bill Palmer, caretaker of St. Mary’s Cemetery. Special thanks to proud parents Brian ands Maryanne O’Connor and to co-leaders of Girl Scout Troop 255 Lisa Alemany and Maryanne O’Connor.
