It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Van Aken Crowell, 74 of Wallkill, NY. She died on January 8th, 2024.

Karen was the daughter of the late Burt (Jackie) Van Aken and Marjorie (Robert) Hileman and resided in Wallkill.   She attended New Paltz High School and obtained her R.N. from the Mount Vernon School of Nursing. Karen worked various jobs as a registered nurse, including Kingston Hospital, the Wallkill Correctional Facility, private practice with Dr. Francis Mayle and Riverfront Medical Services.  She last worked for United Healthcare as a diabetes case worker and educator. Karen had a passion for healthcare and took her job seriously providing competent care.

Karen met the love of her life, Hugh D. Crowell, who preceded her in death just three months ago.  They had been married for 52 years. Together, they shared two children: Shawn (Leah) Crowell of Warrington, PA and their children: Kayleigh, Mackenzie, and Connor. Their other son, Mark (Sharon) Crowell of Mountain Top, PA and their children: Matthew, Michael, and Caitrin. Other family members include her brother Richard (JoEllen) Van Aken of Poughkeepsie, her niece, Megan Van Aken and nephew, Jason Van Aken and their families. Karen also has numerous cousins and other relatives.

Karen loved her grandchildren and they were her pride and joy.  She developed dementia which made it difficult for her to function independently these last few years.  She found peace at home listening to music and watching nature. In addition to her husband caring for her, Karen had some special angels, Cathy, Rose, and Norma, along with many other caregivers, family members, friends, and neighbors.   We will forever be grateful for your loving care!

Memorial visitation will be Monday, January 22, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., at Wallkill Reformed Church, 45 Bridge St., Wallkill. A service will follow at 12pm at the church.

In lieu of flowers, perform an act of kindness, volunteer, smile, and live each day serving the Lord. Donations in Karen's memory can be made to Wallkill Reformed Church in Wallkill.
