Arthur John Scarzello (88) died Monday June 13, 2022 in Frederick Maryland, after a brief hospitalization.
Arthur was born in Jersey City, NJ on March 31 1934, the son of John D. and Louise M. Scarzello, predeceased former longtime residents of Wallkill, NY. Arthur was a 1953 graduate of Wallkill Central School, and a 1957 graduate of Fordham University, Bronx N.Y. (Journalism).
Arthur served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959, mainly in Germany. Upon returning from his service, he obtained an MS in Education (Fordham University), taught briefly, was a writer, and was hired by the New York City Department of Social Services. As a devout Roman Catholic, he took pride in providing social services to the needy in NYC for 38 years (Supervisor), guided by his Catholic faith to care for all of God’s people. He was recognized with several performance awards. Arthur was an active member of parishes and Catholic based organizations in both New York and Maryland his entire life.
He was a member of the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation and Bronx Shotokan Karate School, and achieved “Black Belt” ranking in Shotokan Japanese Karate. Arthur was a dedicated Karate enthusiast who trained, participated in events and instructed students in Karate from 1967 to 2009. Arthur very much enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Even though his family was spread apart geographically, Arthur made sure to make time to spend with all of his many nieces and nephews developing close relationships and providing support and guidance to each. Arthur could always be counted on for making family and friends smile with his jokes and not taking himself too seriously. After suffering a stroke in 2009, he moved to an assisted living facility in Columbia Maryland, and then nursing home facilities in Frederick County MD.
Arthur is survived by his brother John Scarzello and wife Christine of Columbia MD, his sister Ruth Kaczkowski and her husband Joseph of Jacksonville Arkansas, six nieces and nephews, and 16 great nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, June 18, at Most Precious Blood Church, Walden. Burial will take place privately in the Wallkill Valley Cemetery, Walden.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: St. Benedicts Chapel of the Most Precious Blood Church, Walden.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Maryland.
