On the morning of November 11, the residents of New Windsor came together to pay their respects to the nation’s veterans during the town’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony. This heartfelt and patriotic event was a moving tribute to those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The ceremony commenced with a solemn march from the New Windsor Veterans, Girl Scouts, Fire Departments, and Emergency Services, led by a bagpiper. As they made their way towards the Monument on the intersection of State Route 9W and Route 94, the New Windsor Police motorcycle took the lead, temporarily halting traffic to allow the procession to proceed safely.

At precisely eleven o’clock, a moment that marked the armistice that ended World War I, the New Windsor Firehouse siren blared, marking the beginning of the ceremony. Joe Pifer, Commander of the American Legion Post 1796 in New Windsor, took center stage and called everyone to attention. With the crowd’s full focus, the Girl Scouts approached the monument and recited the Pledge of Allegiance with unwavering dedication.

This year’s honored Guest Speaker was Major Stephen Nagel of the United States Marines. Major Nagel delivered a poignant and inspiring speech that highlighted the sacrifice and commitment of our servicemen and women. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting veterans, not just on Veterans Day but throughout the year. His words resonated with the audience, who listened intently to his message of gratitude and respect.

Following Major Nagel’s speech, it was time for the group to place their wreaths on the monument. Each wreath symbolized a heartfelt tribute to veterans who had served their country with pride and dedication. The Catholic War Veterans provided a Rifle Squad that rendered a rifle salute, followed by the hauntingly beautiful notes of “Taps” played by a lone bugler. The ceremony continued with a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace,” adding an element of reverence and solemnity to the occasion.

After the ceremony’s conclusion, attendees were invited to the nearby American Legion hall for a community lunch. This gesture of camaraderie and togetherness underscored the importance of honoring and supporting veterans, not just in words but in actions.
