New Windsor addresses volunteer exemption

A new law, through New York State Governor Kathy Hochul’s office, would offer a property tax exemption of up to 10 percent for emergency service volunteers. New Windsor Town Supervisor George Meyers has been in contact with Town Assessor Todd Wiley to go over the numbers and other additional information on the law.

With volunteer organizations struggling with member recruitment, Meyers has also been in communication with Councilman Stephen Bedetti to reach out to the ambulance corps and fire companies within the town to inquire about their knowledge of the law. According to Meyers, a program was already available for specific New York State counties to receive exemptions, of which Orange County is a part. Councilman Bedetti shared that he has been in contact with the local service organizations and directed them to the assessor with any specific questions.
