Lloyd to host citizen police academy

The Town of Lloyd Police Department will be hosting a Civilian Police Academy beginning May 29, and will be concluding on July 3, on Wednesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m.

This six-week academy will cover the following topics:
• District Attorney Presentation – Law, Bail Reform, Discovery, Domestic Violence, etc.
• Law Enforcement Community Policing & Proactive Patrol
• DWI Enforcement Awareness, Field Sobriety and NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law

• Civilian Response to an Active Shooter – A class focused on instructing ways to help protect yourself & how you may assist members of law enforcement should an Active Shooter incident occur.

The intent of the Civilian Police Academy is to educate members of the community on matters that the Town of Lloyd Police Department respond to on a regular basis, proactive incident preparation and will provide a venue to answer questions in regard to day-to-day policies or procedures. Our goal is to provide information that each participant can personally use in their daily lives and bring back to their families and the community.

It is NOT the purpose of the Academy to prepare the students to become a law enforcement officer or to police our community. The SOLE purpose is to educate members of the community on law enforcement issues.

All applicants will be screened and will be chosen at the discretion of the Town of Lloyd Police Department. Any applicant with criminal charges pending in any court or felony convictions need not apply.

Applicants accepted into the program will incur a $25 cost to purchase an academy polo shirt and will be expected to dress in business casual attire. Due to the limited amount of class time attendance is required and tardiness will not be tolerated. This year we will be accepting 20 members of the Town of Lloyd Community over the age of 21 to participate in the academy (applicants must be a Town of Lloyd resident or work within the Town of Lloyd).
