Wallkill wins 42-0 over Monticello

Sean Perrin checked all the appropriate boxes in his postgame interview after scoring three touchdowns in Wallkill’s 42-0 win at Monticello on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

The first order of business was to take care of the big guys up front.

“I just want to thank my linemen first of all,” the junior running back said. “Without them I wouldn’t be here (being interviewed). We worked so hard this week. I just want to thank my team.”

When asked how the Class A Panthers (2-0) would prepare for a big showdown at Class AA Middletown Friday night, Perrin gave the kind of answer that his coaches and teachers would love to hear.

“This coming week we have to work hard,” he said. “We have to focus in the classroom and on the field. We just have to be ready.”

Perrin certainly was ready for Saturday’s non-league test against an overmatched Monticello squad that was opening the 2021 fall season.

Although the grass field was soggy due to recent rainfall, Perrin didn’t let it bother him a bit. Even though Wallkill plays its home games on artificial turf that is perfect for their speedy playmakers, he said he didn’t let the field conditions affect him.

“My socks are soaked,” he laughed. “We’re not really used to this, but we just get it done.”

Senior quarterback Mat Shea was on target all afternoon too. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 32 yards on five carries.

Wallkill took the opening kickoff and needed only four plays to take a 6-0 lead on Shea’s 3-yard run. The big play in the drive was Shea’s 31-yard pass to Mason Ondreyko. Kicker Jayden Torres, who was 6-for-6 on extra points, made it 7-0 with the PAT.

Perrin plunged in from 1 yard out for his first TD to make it 14-0 on the second play of the second quarter.

Senior flanker Ty Crowley upped the lead to 21-0 midway through the second quarter when he found himself wide open on a wheel route for a 26-yard scoring pass from Shea.

“I just think the defenders got a little lost and Mat threw a good ball to me,” he said.

Crowley said Wallkill’s offense benefits from Shea’s ability to run as well as pass the football.

“He’s a dual threat,” Crowley said. “If I’m covered, he can run for 20 yards. If they come out on Mat, he’s throwing it to me.”

Trailing 21-0 at the half, Monticello fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and junior linebacker Gabe Crespi pounced on it to give Wallkill possession on the Monticello 32.

It took Shea just two plays to get it into the end zone. He hit senior receiver Jack Rauschenbach with a 23-yard TD toss to increase the lead to 28-0.

Perrin added TD runs and 9 and 1 yards to wrap up the scoring in the fourth quarter. He finished with 74 yards on 11 carries and caught two passes for 41 yards.

Ondreyko led all Wallkill receivers with six catches for 92 yards.

On defense, Colin McCartney had an interception and defensive back Rich Martinez led the team in tackles.
Coach Brian Vegliando told his team afterwards that he doesn’t think they’ve played their best football yet.

“We have a lot that we can get better at in all three phases of the game,” he said. “But we know what we’re capable of, so it gives us a lot of promise and hope for the season.”
