VC’s Kaleta secures Section 9 tennis berth

The second day of the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association boys’ tennis tournament didn’t go the way Valley Central’s Aiden Kaleta wanted.

Sure, he secured his berth in this week’s Section 9 tournament by reaching the quarterfinals, but he lost his semifinal and consolation matches to finish fourth in the tournament on Friday at MatchPoint Tennis Center in Goshen.

He lost his semifinal match to the eventual tournament champion, Goshen’s Braeden Gelletich. That loss sent him to the consolation third-place match, where he lost to Middletown’s Khaku Agyeman.

Kaleta opened the tournament with a first-round bye before defeating Warwick’s Denis McAteer, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round. That gave him his sectional berth.
He clinched his semifinal berth with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 win over Washingtonville’s T.J. Mancuso.

The Vikings put two doubles teams into the tournament, but neither were able to secure a sectional spot, reaching the second round before getting eliminated.

Liam Geiger and Luke Pepaj opened the tournament with a win over Goshen’s Will Malian and Rohan Chhabra in the first round before losing to Washingtonville’s Paul Nischan and Matt Medina.

Sean Watson and Marco Collarelli opened the tournament by beating Minisink Valley’s Juan Arias and Rico Arias. They were eliminated from the tournament by Newburgh’s Emilien Boyer and Alex Cestaro.

The Section 9 tournament is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
