VC girls fall to Newburgh, 6-1

The Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks continue to be a problem for the Valley Central girls’ soccer team.
The Goldbacks became the first team to beat the Vikings twice this year, scoring two early goals, handing them a 6-1 loss on Wednesday at NFA North.

“They came out and played really well,” Valley Central coach Jon Walsh said. “We didn’t respond in a way that we could have, and they exploited some of their weaknesses.”

The Goldbacks scored two goals within the game’s first 10 minutes and maintained offensive pressure on the Vikings and goalkeeper Grace Suchy all game.

The Vikings got their lone goal in the game’s 11th minute, but it was one of the few times the Vikings were able to get some pressure on Newburgh goalkeeper Taryn Judson.

“It was hard for us to get things going,” Walsh said. “They really disrupted our offensive patterns. They were really good at making their offense a good defense as well.”

The Newburgh offense continued immediately after the Vikings drew to within one, as Marina Parodo added a goal and Julia Leonard scored in the 22nd minute to give the Goldbacks a 4-1 lead at the break at halftime.

Mikayla Podlas added a goal to make it five one and the Goldbacks tacked on one more in the 62nd minute.

These two teams met earlier in the season on Sept. 20 in a game the Goldbacks won, 3-2, but Newburgh was in control for most of the 80 minutes.

“I just hope we can see that there’s still work to do,” Walsh said. “We’re not done yet and we’ve got to put our heads down and just keep working.”

The Vikings’ run through the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association didn’t get any easier on Friday as the Vikings suffered a 1-0 loss to the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders on Friday afternoon.

The Vikings were scheduled to close the season on Wednesday by hosting Kingston. They were scheduled to visit Middletown on Monday.

The loss to Newburgh ended the Vikings’ four-game winning streak that qualified them for the Section 9 Class AA tournament as they finished their OCIAA Division II season with a 2-2-0 record.

They lost to both Pine Bush and Warwick the first time through their three-team division but beat both the second time around.

“We’re going to be there, but if we play like this it’s going to be short-lived,” Walsh said.
