Valley Central budget passes by 2-1 margin

Posted

Voters in the Valley Central School District approved the 2022-23 budget , Tuesday, with 63.9 percent of the votes.

The 116,600,000  budget passed by a margin of 737-417.. The budget to budget increase was 3.92% and a tax levy of 1.76%.

Brad Conklin, School Business Official, explained, " The tax levy cap for VC was 4.4% . However, the BOE felt that imposing that tax levy would be difficult for some residents so the BOE adopted a budget with a 1.76% levy increase, which was approved by voters. This balances the needs of the community with the goal of providing long-term financial stability to the district, especially at a time of rising costs."

The budget also included a transfer to the Capital Fund of $1.5 million to be applied to the 2021 Capital Project, as well as $380,000 to be used for a Capital Outlay Project to address facility needs (stadium scoreboard and entrance vestibule at Central Administration building).

In the school board election, three candidates ran for three seats. Incumbents Sarah Messing (874 votes), Diane Revoir (785) and first-time candidate Jane Samuelson (766) were all elected to three-year terms. Trustee Art Fitzgerald chose not to run. There were also 60 write-in voted cast Tuesday.

"I would like to recognize Art Fitzgerald's three years of service on the BOE, especially at a difficult time in history with the pandemic. Sarah Messing and Diana Revoir are also to be recognized for their years of service and I am glad they have chosen to continue to serve the District on the BOE. Art is certainly appreciated for his contribution to the BOE and we look forward to working with Jane Samuelson as she joins the Board," said School Board President, Joseph Bond.

"We are grateful to the Valley Central community for their continued support of the district. It has been a long road getting back to normal so we appreciate the support shown by the voters," stated Superintendent John Xanthis.
