Montgomery seeking a sidewalks grant

Posted

The Village of Montgomery has been looking to add sidewalks for some time, but may have to face the reality that grant money just isn’t available.

“You can buy a pickle ball (court) but you can’t get sidewalks,”complained Trustee Mike Hembury, who has been championing the cause of adding sidewalks in the village. He had lobbied for the village to seek a Community Development Block Grant for sidewalk funds, but was told they wouldn’t be eligible. The village, instead applied for funding to enlarge the senior center

Trustee Walt Lindner recently met with State Senator James Skoufis but also came away empty-handed. Next year, Montgomery will have a different representative in Albany, as district lines are being re-drawn.

Lindner said the village is also working with Millenium Strategies, a grant consulting firm retained by the Town of Montgomery to write grant applications for the town and all three villages.

But even if no grant money is awarded, Mayor Steve Brescia says more sidewalks will be coming.

“We’re not waiting for this grant,” Brescia said.”We’re starting on Goodwill Road.”
