Flooding and climate change are linked

The recent flooding in our area is yet another immediate wake-up call urgently telling us that we must address the warming climate that is causing such destruction and devastation.  As mayor Bill de Balsio said, it’s “…the biggest wake-up call we could ever get”.  And there will be more to come.

It is known that severe weather events are related to climate change.  A warming climate resulting in not just more storms but storms of greater intensity, stronger and wetter.  Storms that will affect our area.

The behemoth fossil fuel companies would have you believe that we have time to address climate change and we should patiently let them carry on business as usual.  They would have us leave it to our children to live with the crisis they are creating now.

Gov. Kathy Hochel, the state legislature, and the state regulatory agencies must put a halt to new construction of fossil fuel power plants, such as those proposed at Danskammer and Astoria.  And they must start the effort to seriously begin phasing out existing ones, replacing them with wind and solar energy generated right here in New York.

This is a crisis that needs to be dealt with today. We need to stop burning fossil fuels now to help avert the worst effects of climate change, the code red for humanity.
