While a proposed new Dunkin Donuts at the intersection of Route 208 and Goodwill Road has local officials worried about the volume of traffic it might add, so too is there concern for the place next door that the fast-food chain will vacate once the new place is built.

Dunkin Donuts representatives returned to the Town of Montgomery Planning Board last week for the continuation of their public hearing. They are seeking site plan approval to build a new larger restaurant at the now vacant lot next to their existing restaurant on Route 208. While they have a say in the approval of the proposed new site in front of the Holiday Inn Express that will exit onto Goodwill Road, they may not have any control over what goes into the existing Dunkin Donuts.

“Traffic’s been an issue there,” said Planning Board Chairman Fred Reichle. “ There’s parking on the shoulder - traffic in and traffic out. If another similar type business comes in there, the planning board may not see it. It could be the discretion of the building department.”

Planning Board Member Cheri Zahakos had an additional concern. Traffic from the planned Veteran Senior Housing Development on Hawking Drive will also flow onto Goodwill Road, adding to the traffic.

The town board recently created a floating zone for a proposed 8—unit apartment complex to be built behind the Montgomery Shop Rite. The development still awaits planning board approval.

Regarding Dunkin Donuts, Reichle said he would like to hear from the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) before any decision is made on the site plan application.

Jay Samuelson of Engineering Properties, representing Dunkin Donuts, reminded the board that Goodwill Road was widened a few years ago to accommodate the Holiday Inn Express.

In the meantime, though, the planning board reviewed the proposed color scheme for the new project and agreed to await a DOT recommendation.

The hearing was held open and will resume on August 29.
