A lesson in civics

Posted

I thought it was an appropriate time to discuss education…specifically, Civics.  As has been shown over the past 3 years, we as a country, have no clue how Government actually works.

Take for example, the latest two “hot topics”:  abortion and guns.  Now before anyone tries to cancel me:  You don’t care about my opinion, so I won’t give it.  This is a letter about the Constitution.

The Supreme Court determines that the Constitution doesn’t include abortion as a specific right.  Which means it falls under the Tenth Amendment (for those who don’t know, “The powers not delegated to the US by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people).  So that’s it right?  Ask CNN and FOX and they will tell you the world is ending or starting…but that’s not the end and where a Civics class would be useful.
When the Founding Fathers missed something or something changed, they built in a mechanism to modify the Constitution.  If they didn’t, Slavery and a Women’s right to vote would be a State issue, not a Constitutional one.  Instead of protesting and threatening judges, perhaps getting an Amendment passed would be a better use of time.

As for guns, the Constitution DOES allow for them, which makes it a right that shall not be abridged…except…every time someone does something heinous a gun, the war drums beat to abridge those rights.  We, as a country, don’t ask what went wrong, we only demand “something be done”.  It doesn’t matter that the previous “somethings” didn’t work, we want more of the same.

It is not ok to only look at the Constitution when it suits a particular cause…in this example:  Abortion is protected (when it isn’t) and Guns are not protected (when they are).  A good class about Government will teach this, if we can find room around the other topics being fed to your children.  I am fortunate to be able to write this, for you to read, thanks to the First Amendment…which is also ironically under attack…can we bring back those Civics classes before it’s too late?
