City of Newburgh Police Officers responded to South Clark Street on March 12 where the body of a woman was found to have been dumped. The woman’s body was hidden under a mattress box spring and was reported to have been there for several days before being discovered.

“An individual was found in the area near 84 Benkard Avenue on Sunday afternoon. The investigation is ongoing,” said Michael Neppl, chief of staff. “The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call the City of Newburgh Detective Division at 845-569-7509.”

No further updates have been released to the public since the crime.

In the days following the body’s discovery, a small memorial has been erected along South Clark Street with several candles on display in remembrance of the woman’s life. The woman’s reported description was white with multiple injuries and a stab wound to her body. A bag was also reported to have been over her head when she was found.

The site where the body was discovered was in front of a vacant lot on South Clark Street. The area of South Clark Street intersects with South William Street near St. Georges Cemetery to the north and Benkard Avenue to the south. Several garage units, which appeared to be locked up, were adjacent to the site and a property awaiting purchase sat on the corner of South Clark.

A resident who lived across the street from the crime scene said they had no idea that the woman was there but recalled seeing the box spring in two separate locations along the street. On Friday, March 17, the resident said the garbage that had been left along South Clark was collected. Previous reports had shared images of the previous scene that had trash and other debris scattered. Another resident also did not see or hear anything about the crime until the police arrived.

Across the street from the crime scene on a second story balcony was a camera that faced the street level at an angle but it was unclear how wide of range the camera was able to capture.
