Walden trustee questions senior housing enforcement

Posted

At the Village of Walden board of trustees meeting last week, conversation arose about tighter senior housing enforcements.

Trustee Becky Pearson confronted the board about their 55 and older rule for senior housing, stating that she has some issues with how it’s enforced. “I’m confident that there are people living in senior places that are not 55 and older,” said Pearson.

Village Manager John Revella stated that they can’t stop someone who is under 55 from living in senior housing if they aren’t the main occupant, but Pearson claims that’s not true based on village code.

Pearson also brought up new senior housing.“There’s a new senior apartment going up, who is going to enforce that? How does that get enforced? Maybe we need to put that into our law,” Pearson added.

“What if you’re 55 years old and a 13-year-old child?” Trustee Lynn Thompson then asked. Pearson responded, “Then you don’t live there.”

This answer received mixed emotions from the board and got directed to Village Attorney Dave Donovan, who plans to look at the village code.

Donovan plans to read the code in its entirety and come back with an answer for Pearson.
