The Valley Central Vikings couldn’t overcome a strong showing from visiting Newburgh Free Academy, falling 9-4 in their season opener on a damp, chilly Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the loss, the Vikings (0-1) got a solid performance on the mound from Gavin Rounds. The junior right-hander struck out six over five innings, allowing just two earned runs (three total) on four hits.

Offensively, Valley Central spread the production around with five different players recording a hit. Kellen Pliler led the way, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Mason McDonald, Justin Freeman, Caleb Stewart and Darren Russo each added a hit and a run scored.

Newburgh broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hitting to pull away.

Valley Central will look to bounce back on the road Wednesday at Monticello before returning home to host Goshen on Friday.
