Ulster Legislators call for Trump resignation

Posted

Fourteen members, mostly Democrat, of the Ulster County Legislature issued a letter condemning recent events at the U.S. Capitol and urged Congressman Antonio Delgado and Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer to do everything in their power to insure that the “all of those who incited and perpetrated the deadly insurrection at the People’s House are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The letter, signed by Chairman David Donaldson, Vice Chair Tracey A. Bartels and 12 other members of the legislative body, said the President should resign and let the Vice President fill his duties until the next President is sworn in.

“We are a nation governed by the rule of law, and our democracy is built upon the fundamental principle of majority rule and the peaceful transfer of power,” the letter read.  “The chaos, violence, and insurrection at the U.S. Capitol this past Wednesday, incited by the call of the outgoing President, was an act of treason and the first breach of the home of our democracy since 1814, when the British army set it on fire. “

Dean Fabiano of Saugerties was the lone Republican to sign the letter, addressed to Schumer, Gillibrand and Delgado.

“The fact that the members of the Democrat and Republican Congress returned to their seats after the insurrection and worked well into the morning to carry out the ritual certification for the transfer of power is reassuring, but it does not erase what happened,” the letter continued.

“We ask you, our representatives in Congress, to do everything in your power to ensure that all of the individuals who incited and perpetrated the deadly insurrection at the People’s House, are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
