U-Haul plan presented in New Windsor

The New Windsor Planning Board approved to set a mandatory public hearing for a new U-Haul self storage facility along Route 32. The project proposes a 47,433 square-foot self-storage building located on a parcel adjacent to the Popeyes Chicken restaurant and the entrance and properties located within the Washington Green Condominiums.

The proposed project was set to be built on an unused parcel reportedly 3.68 acres in total. It would be undertaken by Engineering and Surveying Properties represented by engineer Jay Samuelson. The facility would include indoor self storage units and additional U-Box storage units, a portable storage option for customer usage. U-Haul representative William Rodriguez shared to the board that the hours of operation for the site would be from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and customers would be able to access their storage units through access cards issued to them. “It’s going to be an unmanned location,” said Rodriguez.

The current project has not proposed the installation of curbing at the site and has proposed a guard rail to be included in the front of the project. U-Haul’s active site at 300 Windsor Highway has minimal curbing at the entrance way. The planning board chairman commented on the curbing for the site stating that most of the properties and sites along that Windsor Highway corridor up to Five Corners are curbed. No fencing would surround the site and site refuse would be processed inside the building and then collected when ready. Phil Apap of Hudson River Construction commented on the curbing concern brought forward. A driveable/mountable curb would be an alternative to the curbing. “The real reason for the non curbing is that U-Haul rents to the public and sometimes the way people drive, back up, maneuver the vehicles they hit the curbs and damage the vehicles,” said Apap.

Landscaping for the project would be further reviewed by the planning board at the next meeting, and the board requested more lighting to be installed on the site for visibility. The plans would be circulated to the Orange County Planning Department, as it is located along Route 32.
