Town expects ambulance pact to be finalized this week

Posted

A contract has finally been put together between the Town of Montgomery and the Town of Montgomery Ambulance Corps to finalize the ambulance district formed for the town and its villages.

In early November, the Town of Montgomery decided on a proposal from the Town of Montgomery Ambulance Corps to partner with Ambulnz, a private ambulance service based in Newburgh. This came after months of discussing requests for proposals (RFPs) from different ambulance providers.

Town Supervisor Brian Maher explained that it’s a three-year contract with clauses to keep going as long as both sides don’t agree on new terms. The contract will go from 2023 to 2025.

“This contract is our doctrine as opposed to the RFP documents. We used them as a guiding point to draft the contract, but this is what’s most important,” said Maher.

Maher further explained that the first year will have a different payment method. The town will pay 50% on January 2 and 50% on July 1 for the 2023 year due to investments and payroll issues. The years following will be quarterly payments.

The drafted contract which was presented at the Town Board work session this past week took into account Walden’s recent decision to join the ambulance district. Last month Maher stated that the town had budgeted $664,000 for the district if it excluded Walden, or $800,000 if Walden decided to opt in.

The Village of Walden waited to join the ambulance district, so they technically opted in for 2024. However, Montgomery Town Attorney William Frank explained that they will be paying $136,000 to receive ambulance services for the 2023 year. Frank and Village of Walden Attorney David Donovan have been in discussion and drafted an intermunicipal agreement between the town and village of Walden on this matter. That payment from Walden will come sometime in June of 2023, after the village begins its 2023-24 fiscal year.

“It’s understood between the village and the town that the village is receiving these services but any issues they have will be brought to the town. Everything will flow through the town board,”said Frank.

The contract should be finalized this week with some small changes by Frank. The board passed a motion for Maher to sign it after these changes.

“I just think it’s an excellent contract,” said Maher. “We are going to tweak it a little bit.”
