The Paintings of Raul Serrano

Kerhonkson NY-based Raul Serrano uses an inventive visual language that seeks mystery, poetry and a constant shift of meaning through compositions that recall Renaissance, surrealist, and post-impressionist art.

The body of work is held together by twice-removed perceptions of leitmotifs: water, glass; metaphorical and actual "currents,” swirls of tentacled sea creatures, live wires. From behind featureless spectator figures, the viewer is pulled toward dreamscapes, intense juxtapositions of incongruous objects against or within crowds and flows of bodies, human and animal.

Uses of color and form create Kafkaesque challenges to the psyche, calling for visceral reaction or focused reflection.
