Student behavior an issue for school board

Newburgh Enlarged City School District Superintendent Ed Forgit brought forward to the Board of Education a secondary school update and addressed concerns with student behavior in the schools at the December 14 Board of Education meeting.

Forgit and other assistant superintendents and executive directors walked the halls of the schools, observing and reporting the current status of students. “We have some amazing kids that are doing some amazing things and we have to remember to stay focused on those kids,” Forgit said. “The other issue we saw which was very concerning to me were some of the behaviors that were observed.” Forgit mainly spent time in the middle and secondary level schools to view the students. Forgit addressed foul language and behavior that students exhibited towards their teachers and adults. As teachers and administrators, their work is focused on helping the students each day and preparing them for the future, said Forgit. Tomorrow and going into next week, according to Forgit, the various schools will be hosting assemblies to address expectations set by the district. If students are not willing or unable to address those expectations, they will be subject to the code of conduct from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, Forgit said.
