An 18-year-old former student was arrested after firing multiple gunshots during a fight near Newburgh Free Academy’s Main Campus on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
City of Newburgh Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert and witness reports of shots fired and a large fight at approximately 2:24 p.m. The altercation, involving several students and the former student, began during school dismissal and spilled onto Fullerton Avenue, authorities said.
The former student, identified as Kevin Gaspar of the Town of Newburgh, produced a firearm and fired several shots into a crowd near the school’s bus driveway at South Street and Fullerton Avenue, police said.
An Orange County Sheriff’s Office School Security Deputy witnessed the suspect holding the firearm and pursued him on foot. Responding City of Newburgh officers joined the chase, apprehending Gaspar about two blocks from the scene. A loaded handgun was recovered, according to police.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Gaspar is facing multiple felony charges, including weapons offenses and reckless endangerment.
