Pride, Sorrow, and Anger

The Marlborough Town Board unanimously supported the LGBTQ+ community at the June 13 meeting when it passed a motion to declare June Pride Month again and, for the first time, fly on the main flagpole at Town Hall an LGBTQ Pride flag that I presented on behalf of the town LGBTQ+ community. Local attitudes are different than when I was growing up here in the 1970s and 80s as they are in the nation. However, the Supreme Court has taken us back decades by overturning Roe v. Wade, and it won’t end there.

Women in several states now have fewer bodily rights than their mothers, and their health is in danger. Many will need to travel hours for access to safe abortions and pregnancy-related medical care. Poor people and people of color will be hit the hardest.

Along with the American women who have been robbed of their freedom of choice, the LGBTQ+ community and people in interracial marriages could face the same threat to their freedom to wed. The cases guaranteeing the right to same-sex marriage in all 50 states and the one that legalized interracial marriage share some legal language with Roe v. Wade. Ironically, Justice Clarence Thomas, who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, is in a mixed-race marriage.

The current Supreme Court was created under the last administration elected by many who wanted to return America to a time when marginalized citizens would be breaking the law by exercising the rights gained by many who fought and gave their lives. This year, we must get out and vote in the primary and midterm general elections to ensure we have a Congress that will restore the right to abortion as federal law and preserve the rights built upon it. The past cannot be our future.
