There are some changes afoot in boys’ tennis this year.

The postseason is no longer about the individual as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association has added a team tournament to its offerings as interscholastic athletics emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Valley Central coach Paul Berkowitz – in his 15th season – believes that could make the season more exciting as it unfolds.

The Vikings will improve on last year’s 7-5 record but will have to find a way to replace the graduated seniors, Alex Ramos, C.J. Malley, Nathaniel Walker, and Thomas Wutz.

Returning are Henri Pothier and Dan Zindani, who Berkowitz said are much improved singles players this year.

Also returning is John Severson, who will team with Connor Wolfrum in doubles. Berkowitz said he expects them to have some success this year.

The Vikings were scheduled to host the Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks last Friday, but the match was postponed due to inclement weather.

The Wallkill Panthers have already gotten a match in when they suffered a 3-2 loss to the New Paltz Huguenots on Wednesday.

J.J. Wagner and Ben Buchalter had singles wins for the Panthers, who play in the Mid Hudson Athletic League.

The Pine Bush Bushmen will not field a boys’ tennis team this year, athletic director Michael Gillespie said.
